I'm Dale Kling and over the last few months, I've been actively sourcing for ways to convert my old Volkswagen Beetle to run on electricity. Due to the economic recession, most of us have started becoming resourceful at cutting down our expenses. And what better way than to cut down our gas bills and help save the environment.

Over the past 3 months, I've done quite a bit of research both online and offline to find detailed blueprints for converting car to electric. I have a little success with this and have actually converted my VW Bug into an EV.

In total, I have reviewed 15 online Home Energy Guides, 8 of them were completely crap! Most of them were very poorly written with no detailed instructions and many were too technical and had no pictures to help out. There were a few I knew it wouldn't work just by looking at the blueprints!

For the last 7 that looked decent, I tested them to see how the end product would work out. 2 of these guides were very hard to understand and put together, and I'm no novice. Another 2 required materials that costs too much and thus were very inefficient. Only 3 produced high quality DIY Electric Car Convertion which didn't require costly materials and were suitable for the novice. Check out my full reviews on them below to see how they performed.

This book is a great step by step guide that pretty much any novice could follow to convert a petrol/gasoline car to full electric operation. It covers everything from selecting a donor car body to your first test-drive. The information in this book is organised and laid out clearly and with number of photos and drawings, it is easy to understand and worth every penny to a novice converter.

Electricity4Gas is a Must Have if you plan to convert a car to run on electricty. I was pleasantly surprised when I got it. The immediate impression was that the author had put in a lot of effort to make the guide as clear and easy to understand as possible. It was clearly geared towards the novice in every way, from the fully illustrated step-by-step instructions to the detailed lists on parts and tools needed. You will have the feeling it can't get any easier than this unless you want him to build it for you.

After I got the guide, I went out and spent $287.95 to get all the materials needed. Then, I set aside 2 days over the weekend to get the system up. Having the guide printed out is a great help when working on it in your backyard.

The test result was very promising, My old VW Bug did 100 miles on a single charge. It was able to hit a top speed of 70 MPH. This is more than enough for city driving and some short highway drives.What is more, I have comletely eliminated my gas bill and that really blew me away!

I emailed them afterwards for some additional information and they responded in less than an hour. So if you meet with any problems, you can just email them for help and you'll probably get a reply within the day. Great customer service!

So here's my verdict, overall, a very professionally produced guide with step-by-step illustrated instructions. The best guide for any novice or even if you're an expert. This Electric Car Conversion Guide are top-notch and cost very little to get the materials. Thus "Electricity4Gas" is my No.1 Top Pick without a doubt.

" Build Your Own Electric Car" is another guide that made it into my books although it's not as great as "Electricity4Gas". It loses out on a number of points including level of detail and ease of set-up.

Putting the shortcomings aside, " Build Your Own Electric Car" is still good enough for the novice to get started. The instructions are clear and straight forward. Full pictures are inserted to make it easy to understand.

The costs of parts needed came up to about $279.54 which was slightly less than the parts for "Electricity4Gas" which is a plus point.

So although the instructions were not as detailed as "Electricity4Gas", any novice could still pick them up and get started. Overall, a good guide and well-deserving of the No.2 Spot.

The last guide that made it into my reviews is "Gas2Electric". This is a fairly good guide which can be a bit tough for beginners.

At first glance, the guide looks pretty detailed so I went ahead with the testing. After paying $213.69 on the parts and spending 2 weekends, I finally got the systems all set up. The instructions seemed to have skimmed over some sections that required more detail so I had to email their customer support. They responded after a few days and were quite helpful.

I can't say this is a bad guide as the instructions are good and they had helpful support. However, if you're a complete novice, you would probably rely heavily on their email support. So I suggest you get this guide only if you're a bit technically inclined.
